For a UK Standard Visitor visa you need a valid passport, proof you can pay for the trip, your travel and accommodation plans, evidence of your work or studies, and reasons that show you will leave the UK at the end of your visit. Some applicants also need a tuberculosis test certificate.

The documents you need

There is no single stack of papers that fits everyone, but the UK application rests on a few clear things. Gather these before you start so your answers and your evidence line up.

  • A current passport or travel document, with a blank page for the visa. Include old passports if they show your travel history.
  • Evidence that you can cover your costs during the visit, usually recent bank statements.
  • Details of where you will stay and what you plan to do, such as a hotel booking or your host’s address and an itinerary.
  • Evidence of your employment, business, or studies at home.
  • Evidence that you will leave the UK at the end of the visit, meaning your ties to home like a job, family, or property.
  • If a family member or friend is inviting you, a letter of invitation with their details and immigration status, plus proof of your relationship.
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test certificate if you live in a listed country (see below).

Check the current list of supporting documents on the official guidance at gov.uk/standard-visitor, since requirements can change.

Proving your funds

People often ask how much money they need in the bank. There is no fixed figure. What matters is that your funds fit the trip you have described and that they are clearly documented. If you say you are staying two weeks and covering hotels and flights, your statements should comfortably support that.

Use recent statements, usually the last few months, from an account in your name. Sudden large deposits that you cannot explain tend to raise questions, so if there is a genuine reason for one, be ready to show where the money came from. If someone else is paying for your trip, include their financial evidence and a short letter confirming they are supporting you.

Getting your funds to tell a clear, consistent story is exactly the sort of thing we prepare for you, so nothing on the page contradicts anything else.

If someone is inviting you

When you are visiting family or friends, a letter of invitation helps the caseworker understand your trip. It should include your host’s full name, address, and immigration status in the UK, your relationship to them, the dates of your visit, and where you will stay. If your host is covering any of your costs, that belongs in the letter too.

Add proof of your relationship where you can, such as photos, messages over time, or documents that show the family link. We can draft the invitation letter for your host to review and sign.

The TB test

If you live in one of the countries on the UK list, you must take a tuberculosis test at an approved clinic and include the certificate with your application. The test has to be done before you apply, and the certificate is valid for six months. Check whether your country is on the list, and find an approved clinic, on the official page at gov.uk/tb-test-visa.

One point worth knowing: visitors do not pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. That charge applies to longer visas, not to a standard visit.

Common mistakes

  • Thin or missing bank statements, or funds that do not match the trip you described.
  • An invitation letter with no supporting proof of the relationship.
  • Forgetting the TB test when you live in a listed country, which can hold up or sink the application.
  • Documents that contradict your answers, like different dates on the form and the itinerary.
  • No clear evidence of why you will return home, which is the single most common weak point.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to show? There is no set amount. Show funds that reasonably cover your trip, backed by clear statements. Confirm any specific guidance on gov.uk.

Do I need to translate my documents? Documents not in English or Welsh usually need a certified translation. Check the current rule on gov.uk before you submit.

Can you guarantee my visa? No honest service can. A UK caseworker makes the decision. We prepare a complete, consistent set of documents that gives you the best possible chance.

Code X Elite provides clerical document preparation only. We are not a law firm, we do not give immigration advice, and we do not submit your application for you. You remain the applicant and submit your own application. Always confirm current rules and fees on gov.uk.
