A Schengen visa application needs a valid passport, the signed common application form, one ICAO-standard photo, mandatory travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 euros, proof of accommodation and travel, proof of funds, and evidence of your purpose and ties to home. Here is the full checklist.

The required documents

The core set is well defined for a Schengen short-stay visa. Gather these before your appointment:

  • A valid passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • The completed and signed harmonised (common) Schengen application form.
  • One recent photo that meets ICAO standards, 35 x 45 mm.
  • Travel medical insurance with a minimum of 30,000 euros of cover (see below).
  • A round-trip flight reservation or a travel itinerary.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host.
  • Proof of sufficient funds, usually recent bank statements.
  • Proof of the purpose of your trip and evidence of your ties to home.

The exact list can vary slightly by consulate, so check the requirements for your destination country. You can read the official guidance on the European Commission site at home-affairs.ec.europa.eu.

The insurance rule (30,000 euros)

Travel medical insurance is mandatory and it has specific requirements. Your policy must cover at least 30,000 euros for emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation, including repatriation for medical reasons. It has to be valid across the entire Schengen area, not just one country, and it must cover every day of your trip. Buy a policy that spells out these points, then include the certificate. This is one of the most common reasons a file is sent back, so it is worth getting right first time.

Proof of funds and accommodation

You need to show you can support yourself during the visit. Recent bank statements in your name are the usual proof, and the amounts should match the trip you have described. If a host or sponsor is covering costs, include their evidence and a short letter of support.

For accommodation, a confirmed hotel booking works, or an invitation from the person you are staying with. Some countries use a formal invitation document, so check what your destination consulate expects. We prepare the cover letter and the invitation so your accommodation and funds line up with the rest of your file.

Passport rules

Passport validity catches people out. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, and it must stay valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area. You also need at least two blank pages for the visa. If your passport is close to either limit, renew it before you apply.

Common mistakes

  • Insurance that falls short of 30,000 euros, or that does not cover the whole trip or the whole area.
  • A passport that is too old or too close to expiry.
  • Bank statements that do not match the length or cost of the trip.
  • Applying at the wrong consulate instead of your main destination.
  • A photo that does not meet the ICAO size and quality rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do children need all the same documents? Children need most of the same items, plus documents like a birth certificate and, in many cases, consent from parents. Check the destination consulate’s rules for minors.

How recent do bank statements need to be? Usually the last few months. Confirm the exact period with your consulate, and be ready to explain any large recent deposits.

Can you guarantee my visa? No. The consulate decides. We make sure your document set is complete and consistent so nothing avoidable counts against you.

Code X Elite provides document preparation and form-filling. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal or immigration advice. You submit your own application. Confirm current requirements on the destination consulate’s official website.
